Andy Murray the great British hope

BRAD'S TIP: Possesses the necessary talent to shine on the major stage of a grand slam, but when the heat is on, can go missing. Has the fire-power to demolish the big names, if only he showed enough poise and maturity to allow his skills to be executed under pressure. For mine, I can't see him making the final and wouldn't be surprised if he missed out on a semi final berth.

Touted as the next superstar of the game, Andy Murray has once again been well supported to win the opening grand slam on the 2010 tennis calendar, writes Brad Thompson.

Despite losing his ATP World tour final match in London to Roger Federer recently, there is no doubt his overwhelming record against the world number one plays some part in the support he has received.

The young scot has a healthy ascendency in his overall head-to-head record with Federer (6-4).

But when the pressure was applied in their solitary clash in a grand slam event (2008 US Open final), Federer reinforced Murray's immaturity, outclassing and outmuscling the hapless scot in straight sets.

Murray owns a distinctly moderate record at Melbourne Park, where he has never advanced further than the last 16. Yes, he has been beaten by solid players on all occasions but does he deserve to be on the second line of betting?

Currently showing $7.20 as the clear second favourite, he makes claims but he needs to step up to the next level if he wishes to dethrone the much more accomplished players he will be forced to overcome.

Once again, his draw will be crucial. His tennis has progressed in leaps and bounds in recent years, but the hype overshadows his lack of serious results in grand slams.
